Volunteer Call Taker

Are you the kind of person that feels a strong need to help your community when help is needed most?  If so, becoming a Vermont 2-1-1 Volunteer Call Taker may be for you.

Volunteer Description: This program is targeted at preparing a group of “on-call” community members that will have training before a real emergency event occurs.  Recent events and practice drills have shown us that extra staff will be needed to handle a sharp increase in calls to Vermont 211 Information & Referral Line during and following an emergency incident in Vermont.  An effectively trained group of volunteers working beside experienced Vermont 2-1-1 staff will serve as a support to local emergency responders.  This support role involves regular training that will prepare you to answer questions from the public via phone.  The availability of a live, caring person to answer questions about community resources and services has proven to be a critical component to an effective community response.

Location:  Vermont 2-1-1, 76 Pearl Street, Essex Junction, VT 05452

Requirements: Volunteers should be at least 21 years of age, have reliable transportation, have pleasant phone manners and good record keeping skills, and an interest in emergency preparedness.  Ability to comply with client confidentiality and program policies is required.

Time Commitment:

1. Volunteers should plan on attending an orientation session.  Orientation sessions are generally held generally on the third Friday of every month from 9 am to 12:00 p, on an as needed basis.  Please contact us for details.

2. To maintain skills and keep up to date on technology and projects, volunteer call takers must commit to attending quarterly follow up training sessions.  In addition they will maintain an “on-call” status and be willing, if an emergency arises, to travel to the closest Vermont 211 Call Center that will most likely be in Burlington or Waterbury.  Interested?  Questions?  Call Cathy at Vermont 2-1-1,  802-861-0146.
